ADEPP Study

Antidepressant for the Prevention of Depression Following First Episode Psychosis.

The ADEPP Study investigated treatment following First Episode Psychosis — the first time someone experiences psychotic symptoms.

The Study is investigated whether sertraline can help prevent depression in people experiencing their first episode of psychosis, for example, hallucinations and delusions. Led by the University of Birmingham, the study is testing whether early treatment with sertraline could reduce the risk of depression and support better recovery. The trial is being carried out across multiple NHS sites to build a clearer picture of how best to support people at this early stage of illness.

Morph solution

Morph supported the ADEPP study by creating digital tools to engage participants and streamline informed consent.

  • Patient Information Animation – a 2D explainer outlining what participation in ADEPP involved. Designed to communicate sensitive mental health information clearly and respectfully, it helped participants understand the study and its purpose.
  • Participant Information Tool (PIT) – an interactive digital version of the patient information sheet, guiding participants step by step through key details to support informed consent in both face-to-face and remote settings.
  • Study Website – a professional public-facing hub bringing all trial information together in one accessible place. The site linked directly to the animation and PIT, helping the ADEPP team communicate consistently with potential participants.

The animation is great and really helps to engage, and being able to send the patient information by text or QR code is an excellent extra way to generate interest in the trial. Many have reported back unprompted that it helps them with recruiting our difficult patient population and I’ve now started planning in a Morph patient information tool for all of my projects.
