All children have tantrums sometimes. But when behaviour problems start early in life they can have a big impact on families.
Parents often want practical support to help manage difficult behaviour and build positive relationships with their children.
The Healthy Start, Happy Start study tested a short parenting programme designed to support families with young children showing early signs of behavioural difficulties.
The programme used video feedback to help parents understand their child’s behaviour and recognise positive interactions.
Parents were filmed playing with their child and then reviewed the footage with a trained practitioner.
Together they identified moments that showed positive communication and explored ways to build on these interactions.
The study involved hundreds of families and compared those who received the programme with those who received usual care.
Researchers wanted to see whether the programme could reduce behavioural problems in young children.
The results showed that children whose parents took part in the programme had fewer behavioural difficulties.
The benefits were still visible years later.
The Healthy Start, Happy Start programme shows that early support for parents can make a lasting difference to children’s behaviour and wellbeing.
